2001 West Coast Trip

Flying FerretLate in April into early May we took our annual excursion to LosAngeles to visit Lorenz's mom, Maria, sisters Jessica and Cynthia, and niece, Senna.

It was a torrential downpour on the drive from the airport to sister Cynthia's place in the high desert North of LA in Acton but the rest of the time in LA was lovely with partly cloudy but very blue skies and green mountains.

We had the treat of being guests at Family Day at the Lockheed Skunkworks where Cynthia works. We saw all sorts of splendid flying things.

We stayed with Jessica and Senna in Chatsworth for the next couple days and celebrated Senna's 14th birthday on Sunday with a nice dinner out.

It was a good afternoon to drive up the legendary Malibu coast North of LA and frolic with the shore birds.

Mt St HelensThe flight from Los Angeles to Vancouver was magnificent. The flight path was just West of the Sierra Nevada range then the Cascades range. There were several snow-capped volcanic peaks including the infamous Mt. St. Helen's.

Vancouver was in full bloom. The schedule had only one short day there but we packied in a visit to the University of British Columbia's Museum of Anthropology.

Next was a drive North to visit Janet's father's cousin Winnie (2nd cousin?) and her son Tom and his wife Debbie to Squamish. Finer folk you never could meet. Winnie was the first caucasian child born in the Eagle Bay area of B.C. Tom did deep sea diving exploration in the Canadian Arctic for several years and now races mountain bikes im competitions all over B.C. Debbie is no slouch either and regularly takes a hike up 2500 feet up the mountain "The Chief" that is nearly in their backyard.

They took us on a great hike on that route. With us in tow it took all day but we all enjoyed it.

We had a chance the next day to participate in an off-road bike trail maintenance event.

The drive back to Vancouver was spectacular with shafts of sun blasting onto the water through the rain-laden clouds that were crusining up the coast.

A light rain would come and go in Vancouver during the last day there.

All in all this trip was Way Too Short and we could have spent much more time in both places!!
Thanks much to our hosts in both cities. Best regards til we get a chance to drop by again.
